Background

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Tonga to the People’s Republic of China was established in Beijing on 1 April 2005 with the first Tongan Ambassador, H.E. Mrs ‘Emeline Tuita heading the mission with the assistance of diplomatic staff, Hon. Tu’ihalafatai Tuita, and local staff.

In January 2009, H.E. Mr. Mahe Tupouniua took up post as the second Tongan Ambassador with the assistance of Mrs ‘Amelia Helu as First Secretary and two (2) local staff. On 21 January, 2011 H.E. Mr Siamelie Latu took up post as the third Tongan Ambassador with the assistance of Mrs Sesilia Monalisa Latu as First Secretary.

In February 2015, HE Brigadier General (Ret) Right Honourable Tau'aika 'Uta'atu took up post as the fourth Tongan Ambassador with the assistance of Mr. Tupou Vaipulu as First Secretary

Our Mission

To effectively promote, strengthen and maintain the Kingdom of Tonga’s diplomatic ties and bilateral relations with the People’s Republic of China in order to contribute to sustainable development

Roles and Core Function

  • Conduct the Kingdom of Tonga’s foreign policy and external relations;
  • Cultivate and maintain bilateral and multilateral relationships ;
  • Provide consular assistance to Tongan nationals in China;
  • Issuance of entry visas to the Kingdom of Tonga;
  • Represent Government at domestic and international conferences;
  • Promotes the interests of the Government of Tonga in China;
  • Maintain good relations with the other missions in Beijing, in particular with commonwealth and ACP countries, and those States with whom Tonga enjoys diplomatic relations;
  • Ensure that Tonga and its policies are well and favorably known in the People’s Republic of China;
  • Promote the flow of tourists from the People’s Republic of China and Asia to Tonga through dissemination of publicity and other thoughtful means to attract tourists to Tonga;
  • To attract foreign investment and identify new markets for Tonga’s products;
  • To facilitate and expand overseas development assistance to Tonga;
  • To report on relevant technological development and advancement; and
  • Cater to Royal visits and high level official visits
